Water-Cooled Freezers Lower Laboratory Energy Costs

A new line of ultralow temperature (ULT) freezers boasts a dedicated, water-cooled system for removal of heat produced by the freezer’s compressor unit.

Sanyo (Nijverheidsweg, the Netherlands) has introduced their new line of UTL freezers that operate with an innovative water-cooling system, which offers significant advantages, including energy savings and increased sample security.

The targeted removal of heat from the condenser using circulating water greatly reduces the amount of heat released into the air. Therefore, a smaller air-conditioning unit can be used to maintain the temperature in the vicinity of the freezer at the optimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.

The efficient heat removal provided by the water-cooling system reduces the power requirement of the freezer itself. In addition, warm water generated by the system may be transported to other sites where the heat is needed - for example, to heat water for hand washing. The resulting overall reduction in energy costs means that the water-cooling system pays for itself in just a few years.

Another advantage of the new system is that a water-cooled Sanyo freezer has a 30% faster recovery time after door opening compared with a freezer with an air-cooled condenser.
