NMR Cold Probe for Biologic Research

A novel new cryogenically cooled probe, the Salt Tolerant Cold Probe, yields more than a 20% higher sensitivity in salty samples that mimic physiologic conditions.

At higher salt concentrations, the sensitivity gain can be even greater, as much as 40%. The probe, developed by Varian, Inc. (Palo Alto, CA, USA; www.varian.com), when used with the Varian nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system, achieves an even better performance.

The probe is initially designed for 500 and 600 MHz NMR spectrometers. The probe retains all the features and benefits of a conventional cold probe, including three to four times more sensitivity than a room temperature probe.

"This improved sensitivity should allow more pharmaceutical and academic laboratories to use the power of NMR for drug discovery and development. We are pleased to continue to expand the usage of this powerful and unique technology,” stated Jan Tschida, vice president and general manger of NMR systems, Varian.
