Novel Blood Test Could Cut Hospital Stays for Children with Cancer
A study, by researchers from the University of York (York, UK) and Hull York Medical School (York, UK) reveals that a blood test can help doctors to distinguish between children whose fever is a sign of serious illness and those who are safe to go home. The results of the study show that using the blood test in combination with a new protocol to identify children that are safe to go home, cuts their average stay in hospital down to two days, with some able to leave in as little as eight hours. Personalized Blood Test Can Detect Persistent Lung Cancer
By finding signs that lung cancer cells might still be present and active after treatment, using methods such a liquid biopsy, doctors might be able make better choices about treating patients, aiming to improve the chances of survival for patients who are at higher risk while reducing side effects for patients who are at a lower risk group, according to results from a new study. New Technique Improves Detection of Cancer DNA in Blood
Researchers have now developed a new method to identify thousands of DNA mutations accurately and efficiently in a patient's blood sample with minimal sequencing. The approach, called MAESTRO, developed by a team of researchers at Broad Institute (Cambridge, MA, USA), could one day enable the detection of residual cancer in patients who have undergone treatment, alerting doctors to disease recurrence earlier and more cheaply than current techniques allow. Capillary and Venous Blood Sampling Compared for Coagulation Assays
Capillary blood samples are generally assumed as unsuitable for coagulation testing since it is recognized that contamination with tissue factor and dilution with tissue fluid affects the coagulation assay. However, limited data is available about coagulations assays in which capillary blood sampling is compared to the standard venous blood withdrawal method. The aim of this study was to perform a method comparison between capillary and venous blood sampling for routine coagulation assays. More...17 Mar 2022

New One-Stage Factor VIII Assay Evaluated
We conducted a multicenter evaluation of a new one-stage factor VIII (FVIII) assay (Roche Diagnostics), intended for the quantitative assessment of FVIII activity. We evaluated the analytical performance of the FVIII assay on the cobas t 711 analyzer. More...17 Mar 2022

Unique Diagnostic Test Based on Mass Spectrometry Technique Accurately Identifies Early-Stage Alzheimer's Disease
Cerebral amyloid load is one of the first signs of early-onset Alzheimer's Disease (AD) in individuals with subjective memory complaints (SMCs) and has potential for use as a biomarker to indicate how the condition evolves. A new assay based on mass spectrometry has shown to be capable of quantifying amyloid-beta 40 and 42 proteins – both associated with the risk of having AD – in plasma samples. More...16 Mar 2022
